The Club
When the West of Quebec Wheelers began, its primary raison d’etre was as a racing club. Some of the most well known names in Canadian cycling made up the Wheelers: John Large, Neil Crawford, Craig Burge and Peter Metuzals among them.
Over time, the club has grown and now includes both racing and recreational/novice groups. The Wheelers as they exist today was a merger of the Masters racers and many of the people that participated in the Majjorca trips.
The membership now includes racers who enjoy working as a team and sharing their expertise with both seasoned and novice cyclists, novice riders interested in learning racing skills, novice riders looking to gain group riding skills, and anyone who enjoys participating in regular group rides.
The current group of members put as much emphasis on the social aspects of group cycling as they do the physical challenges associated with the sport.
The club continues to grow, encouraging members who like to “just get out and ride their bikes.” The Tour des Ponts has for many years been organized by the Wheelers and it is now established as one of the favourite events of the year for Ottawa cyclists.
