I got out for a quick ski today. Amazing day. I kind of cracked myself
though, I’m really not fit. 40mins and I was done. It was kind of
soft, the temperature was up to 8C today so I think the snow will melt
fast now. I posted some pictures on flickr.

No body likes to talk about this, but it happens. If boys aren’t careful when they go out to play in the winter in light weight clothing they can freeze their units. If it’s ever happened to you, you learn very quickly to take big precautions to prevent it from ever happening again. Yesterday I went xc skiing, it was only -10 and I wore my wind briefs. Maybe they are worn out because they are over 20 years old now? I dunno, but I froze my unit. Not too bad, when I noticed it was happening I turned around and skied back. I didn’t go too far, maybe 8km (total, so 4km out then back) or so. I went along the train track ski trail down by the river. It was a bit crispy but really fast… as a result I did a lot of double poling, one skating and V2.

I’m gonna get some new wind briefs and maybe some sweet ass undies from Doders. I’m pretty happy I wasn’t curled up, in the fetal position in extreme pain while the unit thawed out yesterday.

TIP: as DZ would say, when you go out to play, protect your junk – only differntly.

Skiing at V-day

I went for a ski with Sheri, Dot and Rua the ‘bear’ on valentine’s day weekend. it was fun. We skied from Kirk’s Ferry road to our new lot near Ramsay road. it was about 5km there and 5km back. It took much longer than I expected… what with bumping into people we knew and letting the dogs do… well, you know, what dogs do.

I really enjoy the fact that all this ’stuff’ is basically walking distance from our house… and our new house will be right on this ski trail.

Denied

Today I was denied by a few things: over-eagerness, residual technique, lack of fitness and Black Lake hill. Sheri skied early today and told me the conditions were great on the Black Lake section of the parkway. She skied 3hrs today. She also said the parking lots were jammed and it would be easier to park at P6—which is kind of a secret spot. So I set out to ski from P6 to Champlain or maybe Etienne Brulé. I thought about maybe skiing back on Trail 1 from Keogan to P7 and just walking back Swamp road to the car at P6.

I started all eager and that sugary ego snow got the best of me. I dug too deep to early and my lack of fitness couldn’t keep up with my residual technique and muscle memory. I was trying to do way too much one-skating. I got 1/3 up Black lake hill and I was dunzo. I tried to recover by fatman skating. But had to stop to catch my breath 4 more times up the hill and by the top I was totally lactated. I sat on the wood bench looking at the lake for a bit-soaking in the sunshine. Turned around and went home.

I’m not sure I want winter to end

Today I did a 1hr xc-ski. The conditions were incredible. Its -4C here today, not a cloud in the sky. Snow has melted and re-frozen a bit and been groomed and skied. This makes for this sugary consistency that is fantastic to ski on. Too bad I spent most of the ski doing the fatman skate… I don’t even know what its called really, its not offset, not one-skate or two-skate, its this hybrid classic skate technique you do when your fat and can’t offset up hills. P9 to Huron, back down trail 1 past shilly shally.

It’s not like we’re BC or AB here, but every trailhead starts with a 2-3km climb. If you aren’t fit, its hard. I’m not fit. Still, I had an amazing day. A good for the soul day.

XC Tip: Wax is for fags. Unless you’re super fit, and speed really makes a difference who really cares. One Fat Man hasn’t waxed skis in 7yrs or so… and they still seem to glide just fine.

A short ski

I went for a short ski today. 35mins, with Sheri. It was an awesome day, sunny and pretty warm. It snowed yesterday and then froze a bit today, so it was choppy and a bit rutted from previous skiers. I stacked it hard going down hill when my ski got caught in a rut. That really hurt my bum shoulder. I feel a bit tired from three days of activity.

I guess you could say

I guess you could say I started Saturday, with a ski. But it was pretty short. I went with Sheri and three dogs. I’ve had this nagging pain in my shoulder joint for a couple of years. Since I’m fat and don’t exercise it doesn’t really bother me. But when I ski, I have to pole, and poling requires using your arms, and shoulder joint. So it hurt. I ended up skiing with no poles. Which was all right we were on the train tracks and it’s flat. The conditions were firm, icy even, it was fast. Buddy ran beside me, Rua and Dot stayed back with Sheri.
