Nationals in la Beauce
Most of the former s-club has reunited in St. Georges de Beauce for the 2009 Canadian Cycling Championships. I’m here with guest directing for the Kelly Benefit Strategies Pro Cycling team. It doesn’t feel to different as 3 of the four Kelly guys are former s-clubbers. It’s been great to get to know Dave V and the team mechanic Eric Jellum.
The TT just finished here and Kelly took three medals – gold, silver and bronze with Dave V winning the U23 TT ahead of his team mate Ryan Anderson. Zach Bell was third in the elite TT. I think Dave’s undefeated at the U23 TT and this is his fourth consecutive TT title.
As far as former s-clubbers, they took 5 of the possible 6 medals here today with: Svein 1st (elite), Christian 2nd (elite), Zach 3rd (elite) and then in the U23 Ryan Anderson 2nd and Cody Campbell 3rd. A good day for the former s-club. KC is psyched back in Langley. And Sheri is pretty sad she couldn’t make the trip.
It’ll be very interesting to see how things shake out in the road race. It’s not a selective course and I would not be surprised if the s-clubbers made a loose alliance to tear the race apart to create some kind of an easier to manage selection for the finale. Planet Energy will be the big favourites Sunday with the numbers they have. They’ve been riding a lot better than the results hint at, they’re due for a big win and will be very tough to topple Sunday.
