Enjoying the bold new world of TV

I have to say I'm really enjoying new TV. I started playing with Boxee and its great. It's just a nice way to browse what you have downloaded, what's on the internet, what people are sharing and recommending. Yesterday I went and grabbed SABnzbd+ and set that up. That runs as a little service and you configure it to scour usenet and RSS for you, it automatically downloads stuff and throws it in folder you have Boxee setup to use. And voila, you magically get content, kind of like Tivo for the internet.

If this all works out, I may totally ditch Satellite TV. Last night I grabbed 5-6 TV shows and 5 or so movies. I'm still using Vuze for Torrents and with SABnzb+ running too, its pretty sweet. I fire up Vuze and setup 2-3 downloads before I go to bed, SABnzb+ is set to only run at night… I wake up and have 15hrs or so of new programming to watch on Boxee. Pretty cool.

This morning Sheri and got up and watched Paris Roubaix live on cycling.tv too. I'm not sure I'll watch regular TV for days! Yesterday I ordered an appleTV and a new iPod Touch, I'll get the Boxee remote app from the app store and that should be a good setup to free my laptop from the TV – not that it is a big hassle to hook up the laptop or anything.

If anyone is interested, here's a great little tutorial on how to get SABnzbd+ setup. The rest is pretty easy. Boxee is buggy on windows, I think it works better on Linux and MacOS so if you have those give it a whirl, it's really fun. Now I just might have to get a TeraByte USB hard drive to store all my movies and TV shows… I wonder if Fred hadn't blown up the Satellite receiver in the bedroom if I ever would have figured out this new world of TV?

oh, I forgot. If you want to watch Hulu in Canada just go and get HotSpotShield to get a US based IP address, and then you can watch most of the internet content that is US restricted through Boxee too.

HotSpot shield is kind of flakey as well, but when it works, it works. I watched Killing Zoe on Hulu the other day… I forgot about that movie. And now with Hulu I’ll never be behind on the office when I talk to Jakers.

You picked a good topic for this post and you wrote about it well. I have seen a few other websites with similar content but no 1 has completed a better job than you on writing about it.
